BRICS as a geopolitical entity

For all the differences of the BRICS countries individually, they have bonded through a perceived common identity and aspirations toward a world order where their voices are elevated in accordance with their proper place and enhanced weight. Russia’s prime interests are in ensuring fiscal stability and to ensure its BRICS role as a geopolitical entity. Moreover, to promote a polycentric world, strengthen cooperation with the UN, promoting international economic cooperation, preserve international security and peace, strengthen relations with developing countries, and cooperate with other BRICS countries toward economic and social development.

Author information: Victoria Panova holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Moscow State University Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), and is Associate Professor of International Relations in the Department of International Relations and Russian Foreign Policy at MGIMO. She has served as the Director of the Russian Branch of the G8, G20, and BRICS research groups (based at the University of Toronto) since June 2003.
