This chapter begins with a brief overview of the history of industrial psychology and then highlights major contributions and recent developments in the areas of job analysis, selection, training and development, and performance appraisal. It ends with a discussion of the science-practice gap and the future of the field. A chapter of this length can only hit the high points of such a broad applied psychology discipline. More detailed treatments of current knowledge in industrial psychology are compiled in a series of recent handbooks by Anderson, Ones, Sinangil, and Viswesvaran (2002), Kozlowski (in press), and Rogelberg (2007).
