How to best utilize the faculty study abroad experience: A before and after approach

The purpose of this paper is to present a number of suggestions that faculty can utilize both pre and post faculty study abroad experience. This information is based on lessons learned from the authors’ participation in long-term exchange programs, holding positions at foreign universities as well as extensive experience teaching classes with large contingents of multicultural and study abroad students. We will discuss the importance of recognizing the significant contribution that exchange students and students from different cultures can make in the classroom and offer methods to best employ these perspectives. We will also recommend pedagogical techniques faculty with and without study abroad experience can incorporate in their classrooms to internationalize the curriculum and better prepare students for the challenges of globalization.
