Testing the notion of charismatic leadership in organizations as a 'love story'

Charisma and love are conceptually similar. Both are active or processual constructs. Hence, we have adopted the lens of narrative through which to examine charismatic leadership. We are testing the notion that charismatic leadership is a love story. Shamir and Kark's graphic rating scale was used to attempt to quantify the level of identification with definitions of love when reflecting upon the experience of charismatic leadership. Charismatic leadership was seen to be a noun more than a verb. People identified most with affection, warmth, fondness and regard. The charismatic narrative might be about the relationship with a favoured aunt rather than a conventional `love story'. Important implications for the development of leadership capability are posited.
